Longevity

​Testing my VO2 Max has been on my bucket list for a few years. This morning, I put my trust in James Munro at B Elite to set up and monitor my test, which turned out to be extremely informative and not as brutal as I thought it would be! In a nutshell, a VO2 Max test measures how much oxygen your body uses while exercising.​

For the longest time I thought that VO2 Max testing was only for high performance athletes. After speaking with James, and doing a bit of research, I found out that VO2 Max is a top predictor for longevity. Since it declines as we age, it is important to stay active!

​​​Why did I want to test my VO2 Max?

​I simply wanted to understand my fitness level a little better so I could tailor my exercise program to two specific goals: weight management and living a healthy life as long as I can. Having a fitness baseline that can improve overtime was also a motivating factor.

Specifically, I wanted to determine with precision my heart rate zones so I can train smarter. For example, my tendency is to push too hard, and too long, when I do cardio work and this can be counterproductive to reaching my goals. With the comprehensive detailed report provided by James, I will no longer have to guess if I am in the right zone and if I am properly fuelling. The guessing game is over! I now have a clear plan on how to train for longevity.

The test concluded that my VO2 Max is currently 39, which is considered excellent for my age group, and that my biological age is 50 (loving that!) I do not consider myself an athlete. I am however an active 60-year-old woman who has been prioritizing a healthy lifestyle for many years now. We never know what life will throw at us. But for now, based on the test results, I am healthy, fit, and grateful to be alive!
