Meditative ocean

I just came back from a wonderful trip to Martinique where I spent the majority of my time staring at the beautiful blue ocean. The view was spectacular and by day one, I could feel the positive effects of being so close to the sea. 

​Curious as to why many people feel relaxed by the ocean, or by a large body of water such as Lake Ontario, I decided to research how it impacts our brain. I found out that a few things are at play.​

1. Staring out to sea can change our brain wave frequency, luring us into a mild meditative state. 
2. It activates opiate receptors in our brain, allowing the release of dopamine and its associated rush of pleasure.
3. Staring at the oceanic horizon, where the blue ocean meets the sky, allows our mind to wander, allowing us to be in a creative state.
4. The colour blue is associated with feelings of calm and peace.
5. Listening to the ebb and flow of waves and the swell of the sea naturally soothes and relaxes the brain.

As I am writing this content on the first day of spring 2024, it is snowing here in Toronto. I do miss the warmth and the pace of life on the island of Martinique, but I am grateful that I live close by this beautiful, body of water called Lake Ontario. You can find me by its shores quite often, walking, staring, and taking pictures, such as those ones below. Quite a meditative experience!
